Boomeranger Boats and NestAI have agreed to collaborate on developing autonomous maritime systems for European security and defence actors. The partnership comes at a time when Europe is strengthening its defence capabilities and seeking new technological solutions for a changing security environment. In late August both companies participated in President Alexander Stubb's business delegation to Kyiv, during which Boomeranger signed a strategic cooperation agreement to support the development of Ukraine’s maritime defence.
The collaboration with NestAI pairs Boomeranger's extensive experience designing and manufacturing demanding authority and defence vessels with NestOS, the adaptive operating system for modern battlefield operations, enabling the integration of adaptive AI and autonomous capabilities into unmanned maritime systems. NestAI delivers solutions that improve maritime surveillance, intelligence, and operational performance in demanding environments, including where GPS is denied and connectivity is disrupted.
The importance of unmanned systems is growing rapidly across maritime security, critical infrastructure protection, and defence, where autonomous operation, real-time situational awareness, and decision support are becoming essential parts of broader command and control. Today's operational environments place new demands on these systems: they must be capable of operating under GPS jamming, disrupted connectivity, and fast-changing threat conditions.
"Boomeranger has spent decades building high-performance and reliable vessels for demanding conditions. By combining our maritime expertise with NestAI's AI and autonomy technologies, we can develop a new generation of unmanned maritime solutions that meet our customers' future needs," says Miika Tammi, Chairman of Boomeranger Boats Oy.
"Autonomy alone is no longer enough. Maritime systems must adapt to denied communications, shifting threats and fast-moving operational conditions and keep improving after deployment. This partnership combines Boomeranger's vessels, built and proven in demanding northern conditions, with adaptive intelligence enabled by NestOS to deliver that capability from within Europe's own industrial base," says Peter Sarlin, Founder and Executive Chairman of NestAI.
The collaboration focuses in particular on the development of unmanned surface vessels (USVs), the utilisation of autonomous capabilities, and the integration of AI-powered command and situational awareness solutions into maritime operations.
